“The Victoria International Jewish Film Festival is excited to celebrate our fifth anniversary by bringing a wide-ranging line-up of films from four nations – Israel, Austria, the United States and Canada – to the community,” said Andy Muchin, VIJFF director. “The film's genres include comedy, drama and documentary, and offer fresh perspective on issues we all face in life.”
The gala opening night will begin with a showing of "Golda's Balcony, The Film". Acclaimed actress Tovah Feldshuh portrays the late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and 44 other characters, including David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Dayan, in the cinematic version of William Gibson's critically acclaimed one-woman bio-drama. The film's producer, David Fishelson, will be on hand for a question-and-answer session following the film. The evening concludes with a reception at the Union Club.
The festival continues with three films on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. Of special note are: "Flawless" sponsored by The Chair in Transgender Studies at the University of Victoria. Victoria produced "Why Am I Here" sponsored by the Victoria Shoah Project . And the Sunday afternoon binge-watch of the popular Israeli television program "Autonomies" – with an intermission.
A ticket for the opening night gala is $30. Tickets for all other films are $13 general / $10 students and seniors. A festival pass is $100 / $85 for students and seniors. For information on how to procure tickets and passes, visit vijff.ca.
The VIJFF exhibits films with Jewish themes that aren't readily available at commercial cinemas, and creates a sense of community by bringing together film lovers who are interested in, or curious about, Jewish culture.
The VIJFF is a project of the Jewish Community Centre of Victoria.
