The fourth annual Victoria International Jewish Film Festival will bring the diverse world of Jewish cinema to the capital city with screenings of critically acclaimed new films from Argentina, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Israel and the United States.
Of particular note in this year’s Victoria International Jewish Film Festival is the powerful docu-drama Who Will Write Our History, directed by Roberta Grossman, which dramatizes the desperate efforts of the Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto to preserve a record of their community’s cultural life that would persist beyond the ghetto’s impending destruction by the Nazis in 1943. The film will be followed by a panel discussion organized by the Victoria Shoah Project with the theme: The Courage of Remembering.
Also of note is the Festival’s opening night film, The Cakemaker, a co-produced Israeli-German drama that explores the complex yet ultimately transformative relationship between a young German baker, his male Israeli lover, and, after the lover’s death, the family he has left behind. The film, which has received critical acclaim in the New York Times, RogerEbert.com and elsewhere, and is Israel’s submission for the Academy Awards. Following the Cakemaker, viewers are invited to the VIJFF's Opening Night Reception at the Union Club, 805 Gordon St., featuring tasty bites and bubbly, with music by the Avram McCagherty Trio.
