The Victoria Historical Society presents “Proud Heritage: Descendants of United Empire Loyalists in Early Victoria” with Yvonne Van Ruskenveld on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies Street, Victoria V8V 2G7. Doors open at 7:15 pm for refreshments and conversation. A short business meeting at 7:45 pm will be followed immediately by the speaker, Yvonne Van Ruskenveld. Admission is free for members, $5 for guests. See website www.victoriahistoricalsociety.bc.ca.

As Victoria grew from its fort days, settlers arrived from across British North America. Among them were some who proudly traced their ancestry to the United Empire Loyalists who, as a reward for their loyalty to the British Crown during the American Revolution, received land in what is now eastern Canada. Many of their descendants made a mark on Victoria.

Yvonne Van Ruskenveld has been fascinated by local history since she arrived in Victoria in 1990. A long-time member of the Old Cemeteries Society, she has presented tours on a wide range of topics, including women’s history, gold rushes, symbolism, and epitaphs. She is also a member of the Victoria Historical Society and the Western Front Association—Pacific Coast Branch.
