Victoria Genealogical Society workshop: Have you looked at these resources? Presented by Jim Lamb and Diana Gaiger.
Come and explore how the following resources can help you find out more about your family. Hear tips on how to approach the people who have these records. Become more informed on how trustworthy these resources are:
Land Records: Jim will show samples of homestead records from BC and Saskatchewan and then explain how to find and order them.
City Directories: Where do I find them and what are they going to tell me? When were women placed in the directories? How old do you have to be to be in the directory?
Cemeteries: Do they help us or hinder us? Are tombstones always correct? How accurate are the transcriptions?
Funeral Homes: What information do they have and what can they share with the public?
Churches: A wealth of information can be found in old churches.
Newspapers: Gems to be found in the old newspapers. Read the Social columns to follow the village events. Personal columns often had interesting information: Mr. & Mrs. Wm Brown have returned from a 2 week visit with their daughter, Mrs. Richard Smith in Ottawa.
Voters Lists: How to use them. How valuable are they?
School Records: How open are they? School histories and school annuals can be insightful.
