Victoria Genealogical Society - GETTING STARTED CREATING YOUR OWN BLOG OR WEBSITE - No Experience Required!

PRESENTERS: Claudia Boorman, Pat Acton, Merv Scott

Are you wanting to put your family stories online, or perhaps share your research adventures with others? These are only 2 of the many reasons why you might be considering creating your own blog or website online. Let us show you how easy it is to get started for free, with no technical experience required.

Goals:

to show how easy and inexpensive it can be to create a website or blog online, and encourage you to try it!
to ease your fear of web technology
to learn the advantages of using your own site as an effective networking tool in your genealogy research
This workshop will cover the following topics:

Examples of personal blogs websites created by the presenters; motivation and reasons behind their choices
Web format options such as blogs, forums, websites and social media: specific purposes, pros and cons
Deciding what web format is right for you based on your goals, content requirements and personal preferences
Planning before you start. Think about your site name, content categories, colours, layout, images, menus etc.
Ethics, public vs. private sites, security issues
Watch and help presenters create a simple website + blog using weebly.com
Go home with tips on how you can start. Question and answer period.
Claudia Boorman has been the VGS Webmaster since 2009, and designed the current VGS site. After taking a course in Web Design and Management from UVic in 2005, she has created several websites including a personal genealogy website and blog using Weebly.com.

Pat Acton has authored her own family history book, and has now braved the web and created a blog for her family stories using Wordpress.com.

Merv Scott also wanted to share his family stories online and started by creating a travel blog using Google's free blogspot.com tool. He then developed a family history website using Weebly.com
