7:30 PM

The Klez is made up of Martina Peladeau on flute and recorders, Kate Rhodes on violin, Barbara Pedrick Blied on bass, Alex Olson on mandolin, and Lucila Nerenberg on guitar. Their primary genre is Klezmer, the celebratory music of Jews from Eastern Europe. Born in a crossroads of many civilizations, Klezmer music combines the haunting qualities of Jewish, Balkan, Turkish, Eastern European, Greek, and Gypsy music. Alluring rhythms and exotic modes can change several times in a single song. The melodies often combine happy and sad themes, reflecting the nature of life.

The Klez also plays Sephardic songs. These are the lovely ballads of the Jews who were driven out of Spain in 1492. Some of the songs are old indeed and evocative of medieval Spain, where Jews, Christians, and Muslims shared a fruitful era of relative peace.

Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
