Victoria Folk Music Society presents: The Flora Scott Trio

Based in Vancouver, Flora Scott is a jazz vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter. She began playing and singing at about the age of six and has performed at clubs and restaurants on both sides of the Strait of Georgia, as well as appearing regularly at the Victoria International Jazzfest.

Flora’s repertoire combines jazz standards with less familiar covers and originals, ranging in style from ballads to swing songs, bossa novas, beguines, and Middle Eastern jazz tunes. Writing in Jazz Times, Chuck Berg describes her vocal style as “bluesy, reminiscent of the hip nonchalance of Mose Allison,” while Monday Magazine calls it “smooth like silk stockings and sultry like a sexy night during monsoon season.”

Joining Flora to make up the trio are Joey Smith on acoustic bass and Kieran Bishop on violin.

Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
