Black Angus is all about Gareth Hurwood and the music he has developed in his repertoire over many years. His talent, humour and experience provide a fresh approach to the folk genre, specializing in music from Ireland, the UK, Canada and the United States, along with original compositions in the traditional style. Gareth is musically supported in this endeavour by Alexander MacCuaig on acoustic bass and Tom Salter on drums, along with regular guest musicians. Black Angus' show has a high level of energy and great stage presence that is instantly communicated to their audiences. The band is devoted to great songs which, combined with their own sheer enjoyment of the music, fuels their powerful performance.
Black Angus' rotating cast of guest musicians have included: Sarah Tradewell (fiddle), Chris Van Sickle (piano), James Whittal (mandolin), Moritz Behm (fiddle), Craig Moddle (harmonica), Andrew Morris (bodhran), Mike Roma (banjo), Ron Bell (piano), Dougal McLean (fiddle), Calvin Cairns (fiddle), Leah Winters (fiddle) and Patrick M'Gonigle (fiddle).

The feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
