Victoria Folk Music Society presents: Jez Hellard & The Djukella Orchestra
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
Jez Hellard & The Djukella Orchestra play traditional and contemporary folk music, from jigs, reels, and ballads to tango, rhumba, and even reggae. Djukella is a common insult from the Balkans (meaning mongrel) and goes some way to illustrate the musicians themselves, and the music they play. Jez is a singer of poignant songs, a stunning harmonica player, and fine guitarist. Since being transplanted to a village in England's East Midlands as a child, he has always felt somewhat foreign, and continues to wander: since 2005, he has played almost a thousand gigs.
Featuring one of the most captivating double-bassists you're likely to see and some of the finest fiddlers on the UK scene, their blend of virtuoso musicianship, witty political comment, and a deep repertoire of powerful songs never fails to turn heads. Potent songs, tall tales, fiery fiddling, silky double-bass, and smoking harmonicas combine for an evening that is not to be missed.

Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
