In the harmonizing tradition of the great brother duets like the Stanley Brothers, Everly Brothers, and yes, the Smothers Brothers, Andrews and Lawrence deliver down-home finger pickin’ and two part harmonizing that continues to charm and capitivate audiences in coffee houses, churches and festivals across the west coast of Canada and the U.S.
You don’t have to know a lot about Old Time Gospel music to get caught up in the sing-along atmosphere, with enough story-telling and humour to bring along folk, country and bluegrass audiences alike for the ride.
Sing Out magazine, folk music’s most prestigious publication, has called the tight harmony singing and guitar playing of Andrews and Lawrence as both “lovely and sincerce” and said their songs are “performed flawlessly.” No wonder that of Victoria’s Times Colonist echoed that sentiment and called this duo the “ finest example” of old time gospel “to come out of Canada.”
In addition to their reputation as performers of traditional material the duo also features the original songs of member Andy Ruszel. Andy’s songs have been covered by Juno award winners like Charlotte Diamond and the Rovers.
Andy also sings lead and plays rhythm guitar. Andy’s daddy was a railroad man, he went to a little white church on Sundays, and he grew up on an old dirt road just outside of Toronto. His musical brother on the gospel highway is Larry Lawrence who plays lead guitar and handles the tenor harmony lines. Larry grew up and has deep musical roots in Kansas City in the southern gospel and jazz scene. His uncle was an itinerant preacher. Together they are Andrews and Lawrence.
