The VBS is proud to present Calgarys Tim Williams, 2014 winner of the Memphis, Tennessee International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category on Saturday, April 5 at the Upper Deck on Gorge Rd. East.
Tim is an incredible talent and we are lucky to be able to present him as a solo show in such an intimate venue, which really will show off his incredible Delta-blues style guitar chops, said Deb Rhymer, VBS chair. Afterwards, there will be dancing with local blues band, the Doctor Bones Blues Project.
Williams won the International Blues Challenge on Saturday, January 25, beating out seven other solo/duo finalists. To get to the finals, he had to perform twice in the quarter-finals and once in the semi-finals before a panel of three judges.
Playing a combination of traditional blues songs by both well known and obscure bluesman, as well as his own compositions, Williams demonstrated he was the most well versed bluesman in the challenge (both solo/duo and band categories).
A lifetime bluesman, Williams recorded his first album in 1970 for Epic records, where at 20 years old he handpicked Chris Strachwitz, founder of Arhoolie Records, as his producer. Soon after that he emigrated from his native Los Angeles, California to Vancouver.
In Canada he went on to excel in the music industry, producing the Juno-nominated Ray Bonneville album, Rough Luck, and co-writing Billboard World Song Roundup runner-up song, Tryin to Rope the Wind. As well as releasing several of his own albums, including Blues Highway and Evenings Among Friends, Williams has had his music published by country legend Mel Tillis, and his song Au Contraire, Mon Frere, covered by popular zydeco musician C. J. Chenier.
Williams is equally adept at guitar, banjo, mandolin and bluegrass dobro.
