Striving for perfection in one of the most refined forms of dance, ballet dancers hold a rarified spot in the world of performance that requires a delicate combination of athleticism and aesthetics. In the more than 40 years since their first show in the heart of Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, the all-male drag troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has blended high art with entertaining camp. Inspired by the itinerant nature of the Ballet Russes, the Trocks’ performances of Swan Lake and other ballet classics have taken them to stages in more than 35 countries and 500 cities, where they have gained a rapturous following, delighting audiences old and new. Make no mistake though, despite their comedic antics and satirical send-up of the form, the Trocks are a talented company whose passion for dance and dedication to craft is beyond question. With men dancing in all the roles in oversized toe shoes, balancing as fairies, sylphs, swans and romantic princesses, the physical demands and versatility of their abilities heightens rather than diminishes the art form

. With behind-the-scenes access, director Bobbi Jo Hart highlights the dancers’ lives without the make-up and tutus. They share their personal stories and often difficult journeys, as many have come from less tolerant parts of the world to join the troupe. Entwining their personal lives with performance footage, interviews and archive materials, Rebels on Pointe embodies the passion, artistry and humour that has made this company a worldwide favourite.
