Adult Fiddle Explore the exciting world of folk fiddling: traditional Celtic tunes of Ireland, Scotland and Canada and fiery Eastern European gypsy melodies.
Students will learn proper technique, style, and ornamentation from diverse traditions. Classes will be facilitated by the director but much emphasis will be given to self-directed rehearsals, arrangements and repertoire ideas. A ‘professional’ approach will be expected by all members regarding preparedness and attendance and everyone will be encouraged to participate in decision making taking personal responsibility for the direction of the ensemble. Folkestra Founded and directed by Daniel Lapp, Folkestra is an adult ensemble that focuses on playing fun, lively folk music together as a group in a learning, workshop style environment. All instruments are welcome and only a very modest playing level is expected (no audition required). Daniel creates the arrangements with members’ levels in mind, drawing from the vast world of folk music including Texas Two Steps, Cajun Waltzes, Appalachian Songs, Scandinavian Mazurkas, Alberta Fox Trots, Romanian Czardas’, and more. Repertoire is drawn from great songs found in the gospel, folk, country, jazz and R&B traditions as well as original songs composed by Daniel specifically for this choir. While participation in concert performances is not mandatory, there are usually several performing opportunities throughout the year including the annual “Home for Christmas” and “Joy of Life” concerts. Founder and Director Daniel Lapp has lead this community experience for almost 20 years, and in 2012 received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his efforts in bringing community together. Vocal Jazz Ensemble For ages 17 and up, accompanied by a full rhythm section. Singers receive instruction in performance technique, improvisation, intonation and vocal independence. BC Fiddle Orchestra The BC Fiddle Orchestra began with a small group of talented and enthusiastic young violinists from Daniel Lapp’s studio. The first performance, in 1994, was at the Opening Ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games. Dozens of young fiddlers, many of whom are now professional musicians, learned the art of fiddling during their apprenticeship with the BCFO which exposes students to styles and genres from around the world. Acceptance by audition Non-fiddlers are also welcome to audition and be part of the BCFO Band All BCFO members continu e weekly private lessons. For Level 1 and 2, tuition includes 3 mandatory private lessons with Daniel per year. Working with one of Victoria’s leading rock guitarists and producers, Kelly Nordstrom (with Sound of Contact; recently appeared with Sass Jordan and Toni Childs as well as Kuba Oms and Daniel Lapp), weekly sessions include working through rock hits and standards, while allowing each performer’s talent to emerge and playing skills to steadily improve.
