On April 27th, listeners to 97.3 The Eagle will get the chance to hear more than their favourite songs when Variety - The Children’s Charity returns for the 8th annual Variety Children’s Radiothon in Comox Valley and Campbell River. The fundraiser celebrates the remarkable achievements of local kids with special needs, and the people in the community who support them.
Generous donors to the Radiothon help children like Grace of Campbell River. Grace has Down syndrome and many physical challenges; she can walk independently but tires easily. Variety provided funding for an adaptive tricycle which is helping Grace to exercise her muscles, grow stronger and enjoy the freedom of mobility and independence.
“At Variety, we step in where health care ends,” says Kristy Gill, Variety - The Children’s Charity’s executive director. “But we need our donors to help us do that. All funds raised at the Radiothon stay in the community to help more kids with special needs triumph over their challenges and fulfill their unique potential. We encourage everyone to call and offer their support, as every little bit helps Variety’s kids.”
In the past five years, Variety provided direct help to 78 children in the Comox Valley and Campbell River areas.
The top three requests for funding support were: travel and accommodation expenses for children needing critical care at out-of-community hospitals; mobility and communication equipment such as wheelchairs, adapted tricycles, hearing aids and sound processors; and life-saving medication for children diagnosed with kidney disease, heart conditions, cystic fibrosis and diabetes. Variety also supports local organizations that provide programs or services for children with special needs.
Funding has been given to: the Campbell River Hospital Foundation for specialized equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; the Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Association for a mental health therapist; Camp Hornby Society for summer camp registrations; and School District 72 for an adaptive tricycle.
