The UVic Orchestra, conducted by Ajtony Csaba, performs Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K. 385, “Haffner” Georg Friedrich Haas’s e finisci già?, Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", as well as the world premiere of a new piece entitled Cântece by Max Murray.
This concert is inspired by the title of Dvorák’s “From the New World” symphony, by turning towards the future in presenting new and recently discovered musical “worlds” and landscapes.
Mozart’s D Major Symphony is the musical point of reference in the first half. Haas, one of the few living composers who has achieved world star status before the age of 65, composed …è finisci già? paraphrasing another Mozart composition in D Major, the unfinished Horn Concerto K. 412 in D Major. The title quotes one of Mozart’s many provocative annotations in the score that reveals an exuberantly funny communication protocol between composer and soloist.
Recent Harvard graduate Max Murray’s (UVic BMus’10) new composition entitled Cântece — written for the UVic Orchestra — reflects on the “essential wisdom imparted by [Mozart]: the evocation and sustain of dramatic precariousness amidst textural transparency.”
Join for a pre-concert talk at 6:45PM with Professor Gregor Kokorz (Wirth Institute, University of Alberta), Max Murray and Ajtony Csaba. (Clearihue Rm. C110). Tune in for the live broadcast at: https://livestream.com/somlive
