A Distinguished Women Scholars lecture hosted by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies presents:

Dr. Joy Connolly (President, American Council of Learned Societies) will present a lecture entitled:

Exchange: A New Definition of “Classical” Literature

This lecture considers the significance of exchange in Greek and Roman literature on several levels, including Socratic dialogue, oratorical training, and the relationship of Roman writers to Greek ones – leading to a new conception of “classical literature” and “classical studies” for the twenty-first century.

Dr. Connolly’s research interests are broad: Roman rhetoric and politics; migration in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds; and the intersection between ancient Greek and Roman and modern political structures. Dr. Connolly published The State of Speech: Rhetorical and Political Thought in Ancient Rome (2007) and The Life of Roman Republicanism (2014), in addition to recent articles or chapters on ancient migrancy, the classical canon, and Rome and modern revolution.
