SUPPORTING LOCAL....(something to think about..)

Recently on a trip to Halifax Nova Scotia I picked up a magazine called "Local Connections Halifax "Spring issue 2012. Besides being a great read of everything local..There was an article that hit a chord with me. As a small business owner in Victoria constantly trying to stay on top of the game and to keep things innovative and unique the challenge to survive on a daily basis can be quite difficult, and I know I am not the only small business owner out there who feels the same!

How we survive as small businesses is really up to you..The consumer. In our changing economic environment with the economy barely holding on, going out to dinner, getting a hair cut, or even buying that speciality locally made food or hand made product can be seen as a luxury. What you might not realize is that when you stop supporting local and small businesses it will be someone else's lively hood that is compromised when the wheel gets stuck.. and the desire to continue as a small business person could diminish.

My suggestion is this: If you love a special thing..just indulge yourself less but still purchase it. If you have a favorite restaurant, frequent it less..but still go there. Support local as much as you can. And keep in the back of your mind that if you stop going to the places you really like , when the economy turns, those places and items you love will only be memories...as they have all closed their doors or stopped producing.

Don't be caught saying: remember that place? it was so good...I miss it!

(when it was you that could have kept the doors open, the items on the shelf, or the people who served you.. still in business).
