UN Sustainabile Development Goals in a Changing Climate

Dr. Strong will examine, in the context of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, the disruption of the Earth's natural dynamic systems caused by global warming and, in particular, the impacts in the sub-tropics. In that region, desertification and severe prolonged droughts and famines rival any that have occurred in recorded history.
Global warming impacts threaten the lives of some four billion people and are a leading cause of modern-day refugees. Discussion is encouraged, with the focus to be on realistic, practical actions we, as individuals and as a society, can take at the grass roots level to help reduce our carbon footprints.
Dr. Strong's career as a climate scientist spans 50 years. He is a Fellow and former national president of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. He is co-chair of the Anglican Diocese of BC Environment Committee Creation Matters, and of the Cowichan Estuary Restoration and Conservation Association. Dr. Strong's body of work reflects his concern for future generations, validated by science.
This talk is sponsored by Parksville/Qualicum KAIROS, a group of churches uniting for justice. The group addresses social justice issues such as access to clean water, food security, homelessness and fair trade. Members have presented the KAIROS blanket exercise, an interactive teaching of indigenous history, to several Oceanside groups. On November 4, they will present the 17th annual World Craft Bazaar at now united Church in Parksville.
