Hear the stories about how some of the most famous gospel songs came to be written and performed and then hear the songs. This is a storytelling and music show about the world’s most famous gospel music.
Last year the very popular storytelling series, Tales for the Telling, at the McMillan Arts Centre presented a show of Christmas stories about well-known Christmas carols with stories written and performed by Marva Blackmore. Brian Lecky, well known local actor and singer delighted the audience with his vocal renditions of those familiar Christmas carols with the audience being encouraged to join in. The audience was so delighted they asked for a similar show about other music.
Brian and Marva are again joining forces to present a similar show about gospel music. You may be surprised at what they have discovered. Some of the most famous gospel music does not have the origins that you would anticipate and some of the songs that are in the gospel catalogue, you may not recognize as being gospel songs. “Amazing Grace” is not based on a Negro spiritual and “Crying in the Chapel” is not the story of a young girl crying over a lost love.
Marva Blackmore has told stories internationally and at venues across Canada including the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She is currently the President of the Storytellers of Canada, and also belongs to the Mid-Island StoryTellers in Parksville/Qualicum Beach as well as the Around Town Tellers in Nanaimo.
Brian Lecky is frequently seen on local stages including Bard to Broadway and Echo Players where he receives outstanding reviews. Music and musical theatre are among his passions and his marvelous baritone complements the stories the Marva tells.
Together, they provide a stunning show that is an enjoyable evening for the entire audience.
