Sunday, February 2nd, 2014

This year Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (BIA) and Dawn to Dawn, Action on Homelessness Society join forces with the BIAs Turn Down the Heat Week and Dawn to Dawns Raising the Roof campaigns.

Now in their second year with Raising the Roof, Dawn to Dawn joins this national Canadian organization that supports local homeless organizations raising awareness and funds to help end homelessness by selling iconic toques coast to coast, with 80% of the funds coming back to the local organization.

For the past 15 years, the first Tuesday in February has been designated as Toque Tuesday which falls during the week of the Turn Down the Heat Week Campaign. So the two organizations thought they would join forces and partner for the benefit of Dawn to Dawn, Action on Homelessness.

Turn Down the Heat Week is February 1 8, when people are encouraged to bring gently used sweaters and other suitable items to donate at these participating businesses: Coastal Community Credit Union 4th St. branch, Courtenay Antiques, Courtenay Elks Lodge #60, Hitec Screen Print/Brazen Sportswear, Laughing Oyster Book Shop, Mudsharks Coffee Bar, Rattan Plus Home & Patio, Sock Soiree, Square 1 Travel & Cruise, The Potters Place, Union Street Grill & Grotto, and Zocalo Caf & Gallery.

Turn Down the Heat Week campaign goals are to raise awareness of energy conservation by asking businesses and homeowners to turn down the heat and put on a sweater, and to raise sweaters, warm coats and more that will go to societies across the province. Last year, the Downtown Courtenay BIA worked with BIABC and other BIAs provincially to raise over 5,000 sweaters for people in need.

Dawn to Dawns Toque Tuesday is holding a Pancake Brunch in the Lower Elks Hall on 6th Street, kindly donated to use by the Elks Lodge #60. The brunch is Tuesday Feb 4, 11:00 am to 1:30, and is a pay what you can meal. Anyone who is wearing a Raising the Roof Toque or purchases one that day, or drops off a sweater at the event will have brunch on the house. The Glacier Kings Hockey Team supports this event and some of the team members will come out to help serve at the brunch.

Toques are available for purchase at Searles Shoes, Mudsharks Coffee bar and at My Tech Guys stores in Courtenay and Comox. On Toque Tuesday, anyone wearing a Raising the Roof Toque will have a coffee on the house at Mudsharks Coffee Bar.
On the last day of Turn Down the Heat Week, Saturday Feb 8, Dawn to Dawn will have the second annual toque toss night at the Glacier Kings hockey game.
