In this time-bending romantic thriller, Georg is forced to flee Paris after a Nazi invasion. As the noose tightens around the country, he assumes the identity of a dead writer with passage out of the country. Stuck awaiting transit out of the country in Marseilles he soon falls for a mysterious young woman, Marie, who waits, day-by-day, for her missing husband – Georg’s assumed identity.
Master filmmaker Cristian Petzold (Phoenix) creates a ghostly depiction of world in limbo, where those stuck are desperately awaiting the time when they may become human again. Transit channels its influences such as Vertigo and Casablanca, while creating a new space for their themes to resonate in a modern context.
“With Transit, director Christian Petzold creates a Second World War adventure that is not a sentimental costume drama and a contemporary political parable that is not a didactic sermon — and produces a highly entertaining film into the bargain.”
– Kate Taylor, Globe and Mail
It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival.
