Tracy Peters: Unusual Migration

Tracy Peters’ media installation Unusual Migration explores ways in which organic and human-built environments overlap. Incorporating photography, video and installation to gather, interpret and re-use historical and structural elements from an abandoned Manitoba grain shed, the artist situates her findings within the context of the gallery.
Unusual Migration is part of a larger two-year project entitled SHED which looks at a semi-rural habitat in Winnipeg facing suburban encroachment. The artist’s starting point involved a sensitive exploration into a foxtail colonization of forested land under suburban threat. Peters installed photo-based media in the shed and experimented with documentation practices to record changes in time, weather, birds, insects and animals in a shifting landscape.
The results of her findings form the basis for her installation Unusual Migration in which she reinterprets architecture as “a system that lives in other systems, and buildings as transitional structures with skins”.
Tracy Peters is a Winnipeg-based artist who uses photography, video and installation to explore intersections of architecture and time. Many years of darkroom practice initiated her research into fragile materials and the emotive power of surfaces. Her installations and moving images are largely based in the photographic process. Peters has received grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council, and in 2014, she had her first major solo exhibition at aceartinc. in Winnipeg. Upcoming residencies include the Void Studio Programme in Derry, Northern Ireland and the Deep Bay Residency in Riding Mountain National Park.
