This month, Amnesty International Canada launched a two-year campaign to stop torture once and for all.

At least 141 countries have tortured or carried out other forms of ill-treatment in the past five years. Sleep deprivation, electrocution, stress positions, rapethese are but a few of the many punishments inflicted on people by their own governments to make them speak, to keep them silent, to punish.

Torture has been banned by 155 countries. But it continues to flourish when we justify torture in some circumstancesoften saying it is in the interest of public safety. It flourishes when police are not accountable for their actions and when those detained have no access to the outside world.

Amnesty International calls on governments to throw open the doors on the secretive places where torture takes place, and to put in place mechanisms to prevent and punish torture, such as proper medical examinations, prompt access to lawyers, independent checks on places of detention, independent and effective investigations of torture allegations, and the prosecution of suspects and proper redress for victims.

These mechanisms, these safeguards, provide a barrier between torturers and their victims. We can be that barrier. You can be that barrier. And together we can Stop Torture.
We stand as a barrier between torturers and their victims. Stand with us to Stop Torture.
