The Fukushima Disaster and Radiation in the Pacific Ocean: What Does it Mean for British Columbia?
Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - 7:30pm
The mega-thrust earthquake of March 11, 2011 off the coast of Japan and subsequent tsunami led to globally significant releases of radioactive elements from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. The atmospheric fallout and direct discharges of radionuclides to the ocean in particular were unprecedented. Radioactive elements from Fukushima arrived on the west coast of North America in the air about 4-5 days after the disaster while the ocean plume of radioactivity was first detectable in seawater along the Canadian west coast in summer 2013. In this presentation, the radioactive releases, transport from Fukushima and expected maximum concentrations on the west coast of North America are discussed in light of naturally occurring radioactivity and historic releases of radioactive elements from human activities. Ongoing monitoring efforts and likely impacts on environmental and public health are also discussed.

Reactor: Lessons from Fukushima w/Ian Mackenzie + Buckman Coe
FILM SCREENING: REACTOR
~Post-film discussion w/Director IAN MACKENZIE
In April 2012, Yogi, Buddhist teacher and activist Michael Stone arrives on a pilgrimage to Japan in the wake of the tsunami and Fukushima meltdown to learn how the Japanese are responding to the crisis. Michael speaks with local residents, artists, activists, and researchers about life in the aftermath and reflects on the old Zen traditions and cities of beautiful temples. How we can embody the Bodhisattva vow in this time?
REACTOR is a short film that aims to uncover how and why we can let go of old stories, and move towards personal and social awakening by bringing to light our interconnectedness and showing us that our actions matter. Ian will engage the audience in a post-screening discussion.
LIVE MUSIC: BUCKMAN COE
~Solo performance
Bridging the worlds of roots, soul, and reggae, Buckman Coe is concerned only with following the muse towards an uplifted vibration. Currently on an exploration of dance-floor friendly roots reggae, the spirit of his folk beginnings carry on alongside the growth of his band to a rocking six-piece. So while the bpm's and bass have increased, the melodies and message continue along his soulful folk trajectory. His track "Stars Over Tokyo" is featured in the film REACTOR.
ARTIST SHOWCASE:
~RIKA
RIKA is a Vancouver artist focused on the ocean surrounding the land he most loves; the Pacific Northwest Coast. His highly stylized and bold ink work, finds influence in the first nations styles of both Canada and New Zealand. His locations are beaches and breaks found mainly on Vancouver Island and favored by surfers for their waves as well as places of special importance to his own self. Rika hopes that his art will give these areas further value and appreciation and be a contributor in keeping them wild, free and protected.
