Victoria Philharmonic Choir: The Victoria premiere of G.F. Handels own favorite oratorio: Theodora. Set in Roman times, the tragic work depicts the self-sacrificial love between a Christian martyr and a Roman imperial bodyguard, featuring internationally-known soloists soprano Nancy Argenta mezzo soprano Sarah Fryer, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, baritone Andrew Greenwood and counter-tenor Daniel Taylor. Peter Butterfield leads the choir. Violinist Mark Lupin leads the orchestra. This deeply moving oratorio is a timeless parable of spiritual resistance to tyranny and an indictment of persecution, topics that still resonate with audiences today. June 7th at 8 pm. First Metropolitan United Church 932 Balmoral Rd. at Quadra Street. Tickets $30 regular $15 students and online at vpchoir.ca/.
