TheatreOne’s Emerging Voices staged readings presents the final script in the series of three new plays by new playwrights – The Nighthawks by Michelle Deines, on Tuesday, March 19 at Harbour City Theatre, 7:30pm

In the staged reading of this comedy about grief, reconciliation, and sibling rivalry, one night shortly after the death of her father, Vicki (illegally) digs up his ashes from the Ladysmith graveyard, intent on fulfilling his final wish: to scatter his ashes a thousand miles away in Alberta. Recruiting the help of her hypochondriac friend Suzanne, the two embark on a road trip—but it doesn’t quite go the way Vicki planned.

Artistic Associate Nicolle Nattrass comments, “I can hardly wait to hear this play come to life; it is incredibly funny, moving and gritty. The characters are beautifully developed as we explore the ties that bind us, close friendships, family matters, life and death, this is a dark comedy that has a little something every can relate to.”

Michelle Deines is an award-winning writer who works in multiple genres, including poetry, non-fiction, and drama. Her plays include A Dog at a Feast (Bleeding Heart Theatre), I am the Bastard Daughter of Engelbert Humpderdinck (which she directed and co-wrote with Kathryn Kirkpatrick; produced by Working Spark Theatre), and Ghosts in Baghdad, which was nominated for the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for Outstanding Original Script in 2014, and won the Special Merit Prize in Theatre BC's 2013 Playwriting Competition.
