Theatre Inconnu: Antigone
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
This modern classic based on an ancient classic achieves what few plays do: it presents so deeply both sides of a moral issue that the theatre goer will be challenged to differentiate between antagonist and protagonist. This was undisputedly borne out during its premiere in occupied France. The Nazis
sanctioned the play in the belief that the role of Creon represented justification for their European dominance, and the French resistance drew inspiration from it as they saw it as a rallying cry against their oppressors. Antigone and Creons legendary daughter/father confrontation has all the emotion, suspense, despair, and hope that one would expect from a time-proven masterpiece. Antigone is one of the richest and most perplexing of all plays, and Anouilh has transformed this Greek classic of Sophocles into a play for the modern age.
