Wood is so integral to our island life that it is easy to overlook the artistry and skill that goes into creating everything from our houses, boats and furniture, down to the most delicate ornaments. However, one group of talented islanders know exactly what is needed to turn a tree into a table or a bowl, and a branch or piece of driftwood into a stunning piece of art. These are the folks who belong to the Gabriola Woodworkers Guild.

Among the twenty members of the Guild are enthusiastic professional and amateur crafts people who have honed their skills, and their tools, to create masterpieces from nature’s most versatile product – wood. During the past year this community of passionate woodworkers have informally banded together for monthly meetings to share information and expertise on everything to do with their craft: tools, equipment, materials, designs, projects and finishes etc.

The Guild provides a means for members to network with fellow woodworkers and to gain knowledge and skills through demonstrations and visits by guest artisans. A primary goal of the Guild is to raise the profile of the Island’s woodworkers within Gabriola’s vibrant arts and crafts community and, while some Guild members create works solely for their own enjoyment, many are happy to share their unique works with those who appreciate their skill, dedication and artistry.

Now is your opportunity to view examples of the members’ work at Gabriola’s first Wood Show where, among many fine pieces, you will find Japanese lanterns, an award winning table built from arbutus and walnut in the form of a cello and a handsome seaworthy kayak built entirely of salvaged and gifted cedar. You will also have the opportunity to talk to the members of the Gabriola Woodworker’s Guild whose passion for wood has led them to create truly beautiful works of art.
