Catch The Sun and the Moon, which took the stage at last year’s InFrinGinG Dance Festival, now re-imagined as an experimental dancefilm documentary by award winning artist, Evann Siebens!
World Premiere Screening Friday, July 12th, 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm at the Port Theatre!
Made in collaboration with Snuneymuxw author and storyteller, Celestine Aleck, choreographer Holly Bright, filmmaker Evann Siebens, dance artists Geneviève Johnson and Nicola Jackson, with costume design by Graham McMonagle and original score by Wayne Lavallee.
A translation from a live dance performance, the film explores themes of Indigenous and settler reconciliation, mental health and healing and explores the challenges of creating a collaborative dance piece. Beautifully shot in nature on Snuneymuxw homelands, in and around Nanaimo, Canada, the film brings to life how a mythic fable about the Sun and the Moon, acts as a metaphor for the ways in which life imitates art and art reflects life.
This filmed adaptation of The Sun and the Moon is supported by Canada Council for the Arts and the British Columbia Arts Council.
