The hills will be alive with the sound of laughter this month as Nanaimo’s Western Edge Theatre presents its major Spring fundraiser, The Sound of Muzick – A Karaoke Musical.

An antic send-up of the Rogers and Hammerstein original, with a script specially written for the occasion by James Cochrane and Nathaniel Moher, The Sound of Muzick brings together some of central Vancouver Island’s best musical theatre performers to tell the story of Maria and all those cute little von Trapp kids in a whole new way. All the songs from the original are intact, and audience members will be invited to sign-up to join in on the musical numbers – “Because hey,” says Frank Moher, artistic producer of Western Edge, “it’s a karaoke musical.”

Nanaimo actor and musical theatre performer Lorna McLellan helms the cast, with the city’s master of karaoke, Jay Kell, queueing up the tunes. “And we’ll have foam tomatoes there for audience members to lob at the villains, and fake edelweiss to shower Maria with. The cast are practising ducking.”

The Sound of Muzick – A Karaoke Musical happens Thurs., Feb. 25 at 7:30 pm at The Taphouse Restaurant Upstairs (321 Selby St., Nanaimo, in the old train station). Tickets cost just $20, with a tax receipt issued for $10.

Only 50 tickets are available, so early purchase is recommended, online at westernedge.org or by phone at 250-714-4476.

The Taphouse Restaurant’s full menu of food and drink will be available. (Food and drink is not included in the ticket price.)

Proceeds go to Western Edge Theatre, which produces cutting-edge productions featuring some of central Vancouver Island's finest theatre artists. “It’s an easy way to help us support local actors, writers, directors and technicians,” says Moher. “We’re one of the major engagers of local theatre artists, and we love creating opportunities for area audiences to enjoy their work. And if we can have fun doing it, so much the better.

“Help us raise some Dough-Re-Mi,” he adds.

Western Edge’s 2015-16 season is also made possible by support from The City of Nanaimo, The Province of British Columbia, and Romper Room Indoor Rock Climbing Centre.
