THE SHAKUHACHI QUEST: An Epic Journey into the Soul of Music is a new one man play by Vancouver storyteller, Jim Sands that will make its debut this summer at the Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival.
The performance is based on the life and musical career of Dan Meichel, a Calgary based jazz musician who inspired musicians and performers across Western Canada. Ultimately, its a story about the passion for music that drives music fans and musicians in a search to find new sounds and forms that captivate our hearts and souls, says Sands. The play is a tribute to Dannys questing spirit that was always searching for the new and the profound and how he influenced my understanding about music and about life.
Sands has been described as a gregarious and engaging storyteller (Calgary Herald). His previous show, CHARLIE: A Hockey Story has delighted audiences in Fringe Festivals across Canada and has been described as honest, heartfelt and well-crafted (Edmonton Vue Weekly) and as one of the best storytelling shows I have ever seen. (The Craig, Victoria).
The Shakuhachi (pronounced SHA-ku-HA-chi) flute is known as one of the oldest instruments played by humans. It was introduced into Japan in the 8th century and has had many incarnations as a musical instrument, tool for meditation, and combat weapon.
THE SHAKUHACHI QUEST: An Epic Journey into the Soul of Music is a must see play for music fans or anybody who has ever loved music.
Jim Sands is an East Vancouver based storyteller, actor, songwriter, musician and occasional clown who has performed both as a solo artist and with a variety of musical groups.
