The Past, Present and Uncertain Future of Pacific Herring in Victoria

Pacific herring is a once-abundant forage fish whose spawning areas around Victoria were important village sites for the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations. Since the 1990s, there have been no significant herring spawns, but the fish has not completely disappeared from local waters. Vanessa Minke-Martin will talk about herring ecology, local declines, and some current initiatives to restore herring populations around Victoria and the southern Strait of Georgia.
