More pageantry than a coronation!
The Victoria Military Music Festival Society has announced that this summer's Pacific Tattoo will take place Saturday, July 12 at 7:30pm and Sunday, July 13 at 2:00pm, at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre (SOFMC). The 2014 Tattoo will feature hundreds of performers from Canada, Europe, and beyond. The decision to stage the Pacific Tattoo at the Save On Foods Memorial Arena last summer, has proven to be a great success. This move has increased both the size of the audience and the scale of the show. With the recent signing of a three-year contract for the second weekend in July, we have now firmly established a permanent home for the Pacific Tattoo at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. There is now a solid planning foundation for continuing to provide exciting family entertainment each summer, far into the future.
"The Pacific Tattoo showcases military and civilian performers in marching bands, drill teams, dance teams and skills demonstrations", said Peter Baillie, the recently elected Chair of the Board of Directors. "A highlight of the Pacific Tattoo, and of most military Tattoos around the world, is the Massed Pipes and Drums, which this year will again feature a very strong line-up."
This year (July 2014) the two-plus hour production will feature the theme of the Canadian Army, at home and overseas, in both world wars as a key building-block in establishing our unique Canadian identity as a nation. This year is the centenary of Victoria's mobilization for World War One. It is the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the RCAF. Finally, it is the centenary of the establishment of the Canadian submarine service in 1914.
The Pacific Tattoo is a wholly volunteer based partnership of military, civilian, amateur and professional performers from here and abroad, led by a Victoria-based Board and production team, ably assisted by a remarkable team of local volunteers. The Pacific Tattoo is the only military tattoo on the west coast of North America and completes a national quartet of annual international military tattoos that includes the Royal Nova Scotia International Military Tattoo in Halifax, the Quebec City Military Tattoo, and the Canadian International Military Tattoo in Hamilton, Ontario.
