The next meeting of the Nanaimo Historical Society features guest speaker and author, Shanon Sinn, as he presents readings from his book, The Haunting of Vancouver Island. Sinn will also discuss the investigative processes and experiences behind this compilation of stories stemming from all compass points of Vancouver Island.
For local interest, several of the of the supernatural events described in Sinn's work originate in Nanaimo.
Across time, he has researched events spanning the ages from pre-European up to recent phenomena that present themselves as recently as the 1990s.
Unlike many works that deal with this subject Sinn handles local folklore and phenomena soberly rather than sensationally, working to mine the original substance of these events that may have been increasingly embellished as fish stories during the ensuing decades.
However, Sinn's writings reveal that he's also philosophical about corporeal and spiritual worlds and how they might overlap and result into supernatural events, "...there is much more to this world than what immediately catches our attention, or that we can possibly understand."
