The Gypsy Baron

The Gypsy Baron is an operetta by the great composer, Johann Strauss Junior. The story tells the tale of a young Hungarian man, Sandor Barinkay, who has inherited his father's dilapidated castle. On the castle lands live a swineherd and his family, and a tribe of gypsies. These two "tenants" have a strained co-existence and Barinkay must determine where his loyalty lies. Once a treasure is found, hidden deep in the castle walls, the relationship between the characters becomes strained. This comes to a sudden end when a group of Hussars recruits all of the men to fight against the Austrians. With a common enemy and the motivation of geographical independence, the two sides become one.
This will be St. Michaels University School's fifth opera. The condensed story is told, and sung, by Grade 5 students accompanied by a sixteen piece orchestra. If you are an opera lover, this is something you can't miss. Watching the children perform a piece of musical history is inspiring and comical. Opera is for everyone! Hope to see you there.
