Book Reading with Katherine Govier, author of The Ghost Brush, a novel
Presented by Mermaid Tales Bookshop; Location: Darwins Caf, Tofino Botanical Gardens
The Ghost Brush, combines international research, scholarly detective work, and imagination. It brings a great, lost woman artist to lifeand exposes the process by which she was subtracted from history.
As a child, Oei joined her father, Hokusai, the printmaker, in his studio. In a time when a woman was a possession of her men folk, Oei laboured to bring her fathers visions to life. Her home of Edo (Tokyo) was the largest city in the world. Oei left hundreds of beautiful pictures. But she - and her work are lost to history. Or are they?
Now, 150 later, scholars examine the thousands of Hokusai paintings in museums around the world. Some are forgeries; many are the work of students. But the authorship of the greatest works, painted in the last ten years of Hokusais life, is a mystery.
Praise for The Ghost Brush, published by HarperCollins
"Govier's expansive historical novel turns the spotlight on Oei, the ghost brush attributed to some of her father's famous prints, and a character that drives a compulsively readable novel."
