Until the mid-1990s, municipalities in greater Montral appeared unconcerned about the increasing number of places of worship in the region. Over the past 15 years, however, this situation has dramatically changed. In this presentation, Annick Germain explores the underlying issues of this shift, and describes how the different stakeholders (municipal civil servants, elected officials, religious groups, residents) engaged in social transactions as tensions emerged during the planning of these venerated spaces. After providing a brief historical portrait of the geography of places of worship in Montral, Germain will discuss the lessons learned from a study on conflicts concerning several different types of sites of worship.
Annick Germain is a professor at the Centre for Urbanization, Culture, and Society at the National Institute for Scientific Research (Montral) where she teaches in the Urban Studies program. Until recently, she was the Director of the Metropolis Center in Quebec on immigration and integration.
