Come on down to the Maritime Museum every other Thursday for Tea & Talks!

Museum volunteers, archival staff, and educators present unique artefacts from our collection, surrounded by discussions of maritime history and other seaworthy topics – all over a cup of tea and refreshments!

This program FREE with museum admission or membership!

JULY 18: The Hudson’s Bay Company and the Fur trade  The Hudson’s Bay Company is Canada’s oldest national company. What were its powerful effects on First Nations and how did it play a key role in the development of Fort Victoria and Canada? Join us to examine real otter and beaver pelts, a Hudson’s Bay blanket and other items important to the trade economy.

AUGUST 1: Indigenous Waterways of Haida Gwaii

AUGUST 15: For the Whales Stuck on a Dry Dock: Canadian Rum Running on the West Coast Prohibition was tried in Canada, with varying specifics from province to province. In BC, it had failed and been abandoned by 1920, resulting in a “wet” province sidled up to the “dry” country of the United States. Determination, desire for profit, and curious loopholes in Canadian law grew an industry of rum running here in the coast. Canadians could load up their vessel with contraband booze and make a tidy sum supplying the American “whales” (big drinkers).

AUGUST 29: Floating Food Forests - Is kelp the new kale? At a time when our terrestrial food systems are being stretched to their limit, enterprising farmers are looking to the seas for a solution. With over 10,000 edible sea plants in the ocean, these regenerative farms of the future are a novel – and delicious – way to help our food systems, economy, and climate.
