The Liberal Studies Department is pleased to present a public talk by Globe and Mail feature writer John Allemang:
The Human Side: On the Value of the Humanities
John Allemang is a feature writer for The Globe and Mail. In his wide-ranging newspaper career, he has been a religion reporter, a television columnist, a daily book-reviewer, a deadline poet, an occasional sportswriter, an unlikely fashion columnist and a chronicler of family life -- but generally he has been fascinated by ideas and the people who shape them. He studied classical languages and literature at the University of Toronto and at Oxford, and got his journalistic start writing about food and restaurants while an Oxford student. He is the author of two books, The Importance of Lunch (a series of essays on food and eating) and Poetic Justice (a selection of his Globe verse). In his free time, he enjoys long-distance walking and working as an extra in Canadian Opera Company productions -- including the companys current production, Nixon in China. Recently he wrote a feature article in The Globe entitled Democracy and its Discontents: Can the Liberal Arts Cure Jihadists?
