The very popular storytelling series, Tales for the Telling, Stories for Adults, with the very popular storyteller Michael Arvaarluk Kusugak.
Michael has recently returned from his tour of Asia where he visited Mumbai, Delhi, Singapore, Macau, Shanghai, and Seoul. The organizers of Tales for the Telling are delighted that he will appear on the storytelling stage at the McMillan Arts Centre to open the season. Author and storyteller, Michael was born in Qaktiktalik (Cape Fullerton), NWT (now Nunavut) on the west coast of Hudson Bay. He was raised in Repulse Bay, right on the Arctic Circle, where people lived in igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. His family traveled by dog sled, hunted and fished, and built igloos and sod huts wherever night found them.
The stories he heard every night, falling asleep in the flickering light of a qulliq (a soapstone seal oil lamp) became the stories he now tells as he travels around the world sharing the world in which he was raised. Audiences young and old, children and adults, are always delighted to hear Michael’s stories, including the stories of Kiviuq, the Inuit’s great heroic questing equivalent of Odysseus. He has also authored many books including A Promise is a Promise (with Robert Munsch, Baseball Bats for Christmas, The Littlest Sled Dog, and his latest book, T is for Territories.
