SWAN's Studio 366 1 Year Anniversary Celebration

The artists of the Other Hand Studio are exhibiting their art at the Studio 366 (366 Selby, accross from the train station in Nanaimo) during the month of September. The Other Hand Studio is an art therapy studio that began in January 2003 at Forward House in Parksville. People attending the studio have at some point in their lives encountered mental and emotional crises that have brought them into contact with the medical system and the mental health services.

Art therapy at the OH Studio has been a great asset to the participating artists in that it has provided them with a safe place to explore and express aspects of their authentic experience which has never been seen by the psychiatric lens. Art gives everyone a visceral and nonverbal way of expression that brings out the genuine and qualitative experience of the person that goes beyond the rigid and simplistic approach of the psychiatric establishment.

Over the years of gentle art making and simple discussions about art and life, the OHS artists have not only improved their craft, but have also gained more confidence, and a deeper connection with themselves and their creative source. This has translated to may more successes in all areas of their lives outside of the studio time.

The September show at Studio 366 is a sampling of the nine years of artistic development at the Other Hand Studio. Come for a visit, enjoy the art display and learn more about Start With Art Nanaimo and Studio 366.
