The students enrolled in MUS 391: Issues in Suppressed Music, under the direction of Dr. Suzanne Snizek, will present a variety of works by composers who were suppressed by the Nazi Regime. Presented by music and non-music majors, this concert will educate and engage any music lover with attentive performances of an array of works, accompanied with thoughtful commentary and historical context.
This class has focused on a number of talented composers who were affected by the Nazi Regime. Despite the horrific events and living conditions many of the composers endured, the music composed during this time is rich with historical perspective, yet has remained largely vacant from the popularly performed classical repertoire. While exploring various composers who produced music during this time in history, the students have had the privilege of learning works that are likely to become new and exciting favorites of any audience member. Please join the class of Music 391 and share in the performance of selections from the following works:
Pavel Haas Oboe Sonata opus 17
Leo Smit Flute Sonata
Petr Eben Cello Sonata opus 89
Erwin Schulhoff Sonata for violin solo (1927)
Erwin Schulhoff Excerpt from "Blues" from Five etude de Jazz (1926)
Mieczslaw Weinberg Clarinet Sonata opus 28
Freddy Grant "You'll get used to it"
