Crimson Coast Dance announces the 3rd Annual Sum’shathut [Sun] Festival, curated and co-produced by Tsatassaya White, a member of the Snuneymuxw and Hupacasath Nations.
The Sum’shathut Festival is an Indigenous cultural festival celebrating winter solstice with song,dance, food and a Trading Post Market on Saturday, December 17, 2022, 2:00pm - 6:00pm at Beban Park Social Centre.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate the return of Sum’shathut!
Join us for traditional songs, contemporary voices, and a Trading Post Marketplace.
Participants will experience traditional protocol, the extraordinary talent of Indigenous artists, singers and storytellers, such as SacRED, DJ DBL-G, Hishuk’ish Tsawalk, Cedar/Wool Weaving Demonstration by Chenoa Point and Stephanie Thomas. Spend the day and catch a featured presentation of hw’i’ttsus lhqel’ts: Jealous Moon, a play written by Chris Alphonse entirely in the hul qumi num language by xe’ xe’ Productions.
Be prepared to do your holiday shopping at the Trading Post Market where a multitude of Indigenous artisans will offer their creations. Traditional foods will be available for purchase. This 2022 winter the Sun announces its return and we celebrate being together – in the light - once more.With funding support by City of Nanaimo, BC Arts Council, Heritage Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, BC Gaming.
