Denman Island residents are invited to attend a concert of original music by valley songwriters Sue Pyper and Judy & Bruce Wing at the Denman Island Community Hall on Friday, January 15th. London born Sue Pyper is a notable and award winning singer/songwriter who moved to the Comox Valley in 2000. Judy and Bruce Wing are an acoustic duo from the Comox Valley and hosts of a weekly local jam in Royston. When the two acts share the stage, not only do they create beautiful harmonies, but they also share personal songwriting insights and quirky humour.
Sue Pyper released her debut album Before You Learn to Fly in 2003 and the title track was awarded Best Song in the Mpower Independent Music Awards. Pypers latest release, Tail Lights in the Rain, introduces more contemporary sounds and looks at the conformity of a materialistic society, romantic retrospect, and some milestones of personal growth. Both recordings were co-produced by Pyper herself and have received international attention as well as great reviews from syndicated publications like Sing Out Magazine for their lyrical content, production quality, and tasteful musicality. Pypers musical style has been called beautiful and heartfelt, with a sweet and soulful delivery.
Bruce and Judy Wing, (formerly Judy Brunet) have been called one of the Comox Valleys best kept musical secrets. Their intertwining guitar parts combine percussive playing styles and melodic finger picking. Add thoughtful lyrics, a smooth alto vocal style, and instinctive dynamics and you get an easy listen that can visit a variety of genres. The Wings have also produced two CDs; their first Saying Hello Feeling Goodbye is a collection of original songs that consider life and love through the sometimes jaded lens of middle age. The album earned Judy a nomination for Songwriter of the Year at the Vancouver Island Independent Music Awards. Their latest release in 2008 is titled This Heart This Season, a collection of mature love songs about transition and moving through the past into new opportunities.
Both Pyper and the Wings enjoyed being a part of the others recording process, adding harmonies, moral support and co-writing material. Helping each other bring our songs to live audiences seemed like the next logical step, says Pyper. They have performed as single acts, as part of Voices Three, and as a double act. In any configuration, they provide an enjoyable evening of great music and on stage banter.
Tickets for the Denman Island concert are $12 each and will be available at the door. Doors open at 6:30 and the concert starts at 7 PM. For more information you can visit www.suepyper.com or www.judyandbruce.com
