In this series of paintings, I layer ornamental patterns in different scales to create the composition.

Ornamentation has been practiced by all cultures and countries, even prior to recorded history. It was used to adorn pots, buildings, clothing, and even the human body as a non-verbal way to impart notions of status, for visual pleasure or perhaps for magical, protective or placatory purposes to appease an uncontrollable natural world. As design historian David Brett states, ornamentation is a human impulse, “...not unlike the faculty of language and counting, immanent in our nature without which we would not be complete human beings. Just as there are no societies that do not speak or count so there are none that do not decorate, embellish or make patterns.”

Using a projector and ornamental details from architecture and interiors, I paint directly onto the canvas. Works that were made in stone, tile or plaster are translated from the physical to digital to the intangibility of light and back to a physical thing in the form of a painting. Placement, scale, repetition, fragmentation and colour are all considered as I build each one.

By removing the ornamental patterns from their original context, the layered, repetitive pattern fragments lose their connection to time and space, creating a new visual language. Endless repeated decorative forms are frozen in a moment of precarious transition and become reinvented to create a dynamic yet ambiguous pictorial space that is neither real nor imagined.
