Encore! Hosts: The State House Girls High School Choir, Kenya
On Wednesday, July 9, 2014, Encore! Womens Choir is pleased to present the State House Girls High School Choir in concert at the Duncan United Church at 7:30 p.m. The ladies of Encore! in collaboration with Powell Rivers International Choral Kathaumixw (pronounced Ka-thou-mew from the Coast Salish language meaning: a gathering together of different peoples) are please to host this very special presentation.
Kathaumixw is a bi-annual, international choral festival which runs for one week in July (this year July 1 5) and features choirs from Canada, the USA and throughout the world. After a week of competition and numerous concert appearances, many of the choirs go on tour around the province before returning to their home countries. Over the years, Encore! has had the pleasure of hosting a number of international choirs after their Kathaumixw appearances and this year they are preparing to welcome the State House Girls High School Choir from Kenya.
The choir was established in 1954 and at full strength, has 50 members although not all of them will be attending Kathaumixw. All singers are members of the School and range in age from 14 to 17 years. The choir has performed in the Kenya National Music Festival and won top honours in classes featuring set pieces, African-American music and African compositions and arrangements. In 2011, the Choir was chosen to compose a theme and perform it at the African Women Delegate Conference held in Kenya. At the request of Conference delegates, the choir recorded the song which has since been widely shared.
The State House Girls High School Choir is conducted by Isaak Kavehere who is a musician with much experience in choir directorship, conducting, composition, arranging and production. Isaak began his conducting career at the age of 16 when he established and became the director of the Shimo La Tewa High School Choir. He is also a music producer and a gospel music recording artist.
Mark your calendars and plan on taking in this concert which promises to be an exciting evening of traditional and modern music performed by this group of talented young women. Tickets will be available at the door: $12.00; children 12 and under: free. For more information contact Ann Yelland, 250-748-1010.
