A guided tour of St Anns Academy and of its grounds is a must.
When talking about the History of British Columbia, its French connection, and the history of women in leadership, St. Anns Academy and the women who founded it are inseparable.
In 1858, five women, moved by faith and their desire to teach, traveled the thousands of kilometers from Quebec to British Columbia, via the Panama Isthmus and California.
Living in conditions unacceptable by todays standards, they imposed themselves in this strange land of Southern Vancouver Island in a very short period of time. Not only were they teaching children, but also adults. They were responsible for the construction of the first hospitals, the training of nurses, food production and of many charitable work.
We offer to individuals and to groups a one hour guided walking tour. The visit is free, but donations are accepted. This tour, given in French and in English will give you the chance to admire the 50 plus species of trees and the beautiful flowers that bloom in our gardens. You will visit the small log cabin that served both as the first St. Anns residence and as well as the 1858 school; and finally you will visit the Interpretative Center of the Academy, built in 1871 and renovated in 1996.
Your guides commentary is not only historical, but also social.
The tours will be given every Sunday of the summer, starting June 1st. Two departure time: 1h00 pm in French, and 2h30 in English. For groups and upon demand, the tour can be given on any other day of the week.
