The Salish Sea: Nature and a Sense of Place. Dr. Rob Butler of the Pacific WildLife Foundation searches for the roots of Salish Sea culture, seeking insight into its diverse and abundant natural world.

The three bodies of water of the Strait of Georgia, Juan de Fuca Strait, and Puget Sound are stunningly beautiful and hold an abundance of wildlife. Out of this paradise arose a rich culture among its first people. Today millions of people from around the world have chosen to settle there and a culture began to emerge connected to the surroundings. The question we pose is whether nature will become a part of the emerging culture or will it fade away?

The Salish Sea project sought insight into how the diversity and abundant natural world of these waters inspired a unique lifestyle and culture of the people who reside around its shores.

Seen through the eyes of biologist Dr. Rob Butler, the aim was to stimulate a discussion about a cultural response rooted in the natural world among all people around the Salish Sea. Although it was very much a personal journey of Robs the message is universal. How will we reconcile our ancient relationship with nature in a modern world?

Dr. Rob Butler is an award-winning ornithologist known for his research of birds, radio and television appearances, and for his popular writing. He is co-founder of the Pacific WildLife Foundation, Fellow of The Explorers Club and the American Ornithologists Union, and an Outstanding Alumnus of two universities. He is also an adjunct professor of biology and has held executive positions in several science and conservation non-profits. His advice is regularly sought in Canada and abroad.
