The Pennocks spent the fall of 2006 in Thimphu, Bhutan. This led to the development of a questionnaire to measure the Bhutanese concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Upon returning to Victoria they developed a shorter westernized version of the questionnaire. Since 2006 the GHN work has taken them to a number of other countries and most recently to the U. N. in New York City. A Bhutan led resolution at the UN General Assembly recognizes the the need to have a new, holistic approach to national development promoting happiness, wellbeing and sustainability.
