Monthly Speaker Series hosted by the VGS

This month's presentation by Yvonne Van Ruskenveld and titled "Breaking up is hard to do"

Divorce was not as common in the 19th and early 20th century as it is today, but Yvonne Van Ruskenveld has discovered some notable examples in researching her historical walking tours in Ross Bay Cemetery. She has also discovered many other “arrangements” made to deal with unhappy marriages. In this talk, Yvonne outlines the social context of marriage dissolution and provides examples from the lives of early Victorians of how people coped with the break up of marriages and created new relationships.

Yvonne Van Ruskenveld has been fascinated by local history since she arrived in Victoria in 1990. She is a long-time member of the Old Cemeteries Society, presenting tours on a wide range of topics, including women’s history, gold rushes, symbolism, and epitaphs, among others. She is also a member of the Victoria Historical Society and the Western Front Association—Pacific Coast Branch, where she has given talks on World War I subjects such as military nursing sisters, Canadian prisoners of war and the Cyclist Corps.
